How Large Should a Family Portrait Be on Your Wall?

One of the most common mistakes people make when choosing a family portrait is selecting the size before thinking about where the portrait will live. A portrait that looks large when you hold it in your hands can look surprisingly small once it is placed above a sofa, fireplace, or on a large open wall.

When I help families design portrait artwork for their homes, I consider four things: the wall's dimensions, the furniture around it, the viewing distance, and the portrait's importance within the room. The goal is not simply to make a photograph larger. The goal is to create a portrait that feels as though it belongs in the space.

Start With the Wall The first consideration is the wall itself. A narrow wall in an entryway requires a different approach from a large wall above a living-room sofa. Before deciding on portrait size, look at the amount of open space surrounding the area where the artwork will hang. A portrait needs enough presence to feel intentional. When artwork is too small for the wall, the eye tends to notice the space around it rather than the portrait itself.
This is why I prefer to think about the finished artwork as part of the room from the beginning of the portrait process.

Consider the Furniture Below the Portrait Furniture is another important reference point. If a portrait will hang above a sofa, console table, fireplace, or other large piece of furniture, the artwork needs enough visual weight to balance what is beneath it. An 8x10 portrait may be beautiful on a desk or bookshelf, but it will usually feel lost above a six- or seven-feet sofa. This does not always mean choosing one enormous portrait. Sometimes a carefully designed grouping of several portraits works beautifully. The important part is proportion. The portrait and the surrounding furniture should feel connected rather than appearing like unrelated objects on the same wall.


Think About Viewing Distance Where will you normally see the portrait? A portrait viewed from across a large family room may need to be considerably larger than artwork displayed in a hallway where you naturally walk close to it. This is particularly important with family portraits. Faces and expressions are often the most meaningful part of the photograph. If the portrait is displayed too small, those expressions can disappear when viewed from across the room. I want the connection between the people in the portrait to remain visible even before someone walks closer.

Decide How Important the Portrait Is to the Room. Not every portrait needs to dominate a room. Some pieces are meant to be quiet and intimate. Others are intended to become one of the main visual elements in the home. A commissioned family portrait celebrating an anniversary, a growing family, multiple generations, or another important milestone may deserve a prominent place. In those situations, I often encourage families to think beyond simply purchasing a photograph. Instead, think about creating a piece of artwork that represents this particular chapter of your family’s life. Years from now, the furniture may change. The house may change. Children grow up, and families enter completely different seasons of life. The people represented in the portrait are what give the artwork its lasting value.

Don’t Choose Size From a Computer Screen. Another challenge today is that we are used to looking at photographs on phones and computer screens. That makes judging physical artwork surprisingly difficult. A portrait displayed on a screen has no real relationship to the scale of your wall. Whenever possible, I prefer to design portrait artwork with the actual home in mind. Knowing where I will be displaying the artwork allows me to consider the proportions before creating the final piece.

A Family Portrait Should Belong in Your Home. There is no single perfect size for every family portrait. The right size depends on the wall, the room, the furniture, how far away you normally view the portrait, and how much presence you want the artwork to have. 

For parents celebrating a milestone, whether that is an anniversary, grown children returning home, a new generation joining the family, or simply realizing how quickly the years are passing, sometimes the right time to create that portrait is before another chapter begins.
